Title:
Talk Me Through this Approach
Topic:
Scenario-Based IFR Decision-Making for Missed Approaches, Fatigue, and In-Flight Runway Changes
Date and Time:
Monday, July 20, 2026, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Brent Moran
Brief Description:

This scenario-based instrument approach discussion is designed to sharpen real-world IFR decision-making skills. The first scenario is flown at night in IMC by a fatigued pilot, emphasizing missed approach planning before FAF intercept, DME arc tracking, and the compounding risks of fatigue and deteriorating weather. The second scenario covers an approach in deteriorating conditions, exploring glide slope failure procedures, in-flight runway changes, and when to execute a missed approach even on a "salvageable" approach. We will address five critical IFR proficiency areas: briefing the missed approach before starting down, making go/no-go decisions before the FAF, managing runway changes while in holding, mitigating fatigue in night IMC, and understanding primary versus alternate missed approach procedures. The material is intended for instrument-rated pilots and flight instructors seeking to strengthen aeronautical decision-making through realistic, chair-flying exercises.

The EAA IMC Club organized around instrument flight, in order to promote safety, education, and proficiency.

Each month, the IMC club provides a "hangar flying" experience by exploring an instrument flight-related question and a scenario presentation followed by a group discussion. The goal is to enhance knowledge of instrument flight, aeronautical decision-making, and in-flight awareness.

All are welcome. You do not need to be an EAA member or instrument rated pilot to attend. Bring your EFB, your experience, and your questions, and be ready to participate.

We will also be discussing how you can earn WINGS Credit to increase Phased Pilot participation in the program.
