Greensboro GSO Weather Radar
This notice expired on
Saturday, December 31, 2022

With the completion of the new control tower; we are now entering a new phase of construction with the equipment being swapped over. GSO currently uses an Airport Surveillance Radar-9 (ASR-9) to provide radar services to aircraft arriving, departing, and operating in the vicinity of the Greensboro Airport and multiple satellite airports. GSO is not equipped with Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR); therefore, the ASR-9 radar system contains a Weather System Processor (WSP) which provides air traffic controllers with wind shear and microburst information.

The existing ASR-9 with WSP will be replaced by a TASR, without WSP, on March 22nd, 2022. From the time the existing equipment is taken out of service until the time the ASR-9 system is recommissioned (approximately six months), air traffic controllers working in the tower and the TRACON will not receive an electronic alert when low-altitude wind shear conditions are detected near the airport. Resultantly, the controllers will not be able to disseminate runway-specific information to aircraft, including the type, location, and intensity of hazardous wind shear conditions.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and we will do everything possible to minimize this interruption.
